Humpback whales pass through Niue as they breed and raise their calves annually between July and September, and because Niue’s reef drops quickly into the deep blue, you can see whales as close as 20 metres from the shore. Spinner dolphins also play close to the shore on a regular basis. This is one of the few places in the world where you are able to be in the water to swim in the wild with these beautiful creatures.

Here is what you can expect to experience if you decide to join this wild whale swimming experience.
Where do we start?
As a group we will travel together from Auckland Airport at 8:25am on the morning of Saturday 12th September, and as we will cross the date line, we will land in Niue Island at 12:50pm on Friday 11th September. We will then take a coach transfer from Niue airport to the Scenic Matavai Resort where our week long retreat will be held. The Scenic Matavai Resort features 2 swimming pools, a restaurant, and pool bar. The resort has a sunny clifftop terrace, perfect for spotting turtles, spinner dolphins, and humpback whales that regularly swim close to the shoreline. The first day will be a day for settling in, relaxing after travelling, and enjoying the use of the resorts facilities including swimming pool and beachfront views.
We will then spend 5 days out of the next 6 days in Niue, going out on the boat to connect with the dolphins and whales and enjoy the colourful diversity of the underwater world. (Sunday is a day of rest in Niue so there will be no boat trip on Sunday 13th September). The boat trips will be operated by Niue Blue, a licensed operator with almost 50 years of combined experience from across New Zealand and the South Pacific, and they are located a few minutes walk from the Scenic Matavai Resort. 3 days will be dedicated to looking for and swimming with whales, and 2 days will be snorkelling trips where we may get the opportunity to swim with the spinner dolphins.
As these are wild animals, nothing is guaranteed and every interaction will be different. However, as long as the whales behaviour is suitable, you will have the opportunity to be as close as 20 metres from these majestic animals while they rest and play, and you may even get to hear them singing underwater. Interactions from the boat can be equally impressive as you can witness the whales spy hop, fully breach, or tail slap, and if we are lucky we may even get to witness a heat run. Niue Blue also have a hydrophone speaker system onboard that allows guests to listen to the beautiful whale song, even when we are not in the water with them.
Wetsuits and snorkelling equipment will be provided, (unless you wish to use your own), and underwater photographs and videos will be taken by the staff at Niue blue which you will receive at the end of the week free of charge.
When we are not on the boat, there will be some free time to relax on the beach and explore the island. The focus of this retreat is to rest and journey within, so the days will not be packed with activities, but we do have access to a rental car, so during our time off Rebecca will organise occasional snorkelling trips, local walks, and dinners at the local restaurants, which you can choose to join or simply remain at the resort and relax.
Rebecca will also faciliate a daily sharing circle to check in with everybody in the group.
Retreat Details
This retreat will be held at Scenic Matavai Resort on the Island of Niue in September 2026.
The investment to attend is NZ$9999.
There is an early bird price of NZ$9555 if you pay before the end of May 2026.
(Payment plans are available if you feel strongly that you are meant to be on this retreat but cannot pay in full at this time).
The price is per person and is for a private pacific view room for 7 nights at the luxury Scenic Matavai Resort. Each room has their own private balcony which offers prime views of the Resort’s tropical gardens, pools, and partial views of the Pacific Ocean. Each room boasts a super king bed, en-suite bathroom, and balcony. If you are interested in the investment for a twin share price please request this on application.
A daily tropical continental breakfast is included in the price of your room, and two dinners will also be included at the Scenic Matavai Resort restaurant. For other meals you can either purchase your meals from the resort restaurant, or Rebecca will also organise trips to local cafes and restaurants, where we can dine together as a group. There is also a local supermarket where you can purchase your own food.

A deposit of NZ$2000 will then be required to secure your place, which will be paid to the travel broker Sarah McDonald. You can email her at sarah.mcdonald@envoyage.co.nz to reserve your place and pay your deposit. The balance for the retreat needs to be paid in full by 30th June 2026.
You will then be added to a WhatsApp group as a way to connect with the other participants prior to meeting in Niue, and our group will also meet several times online prior to the start of this retreat to anchor the energy of the group.
